Bon Weekend – Snappy shakers

I ran across these vintage Japanese lobster claw salt & pepper shakers while trying to find more information on the lobster boxes. After a couple of days I decided I couldn’t resist them and paid for them. They arrived yesterday and are adorning on of the shelves (they’ve currently replaced the rooster) in the breakfast nook.

They’re so cute I want to pinch them. Yeah, I went there. :) Have a safe and fabulous weekend!

Delve into 2012 – DIY

When I mentioned in last week’s 2011 review that the breakfast nook was pretty much good to go, I totally forgot to mention this lovely DIY idea for our chairs.

I pinned this upholstered chair tutorial from Apartment Therapy a while back. I love the basic ivory cushions we have on them now, but a pop of green/orange/red on the top with some padding would be utterly delicious!

2011 in review

When I look back on what we did last year I see that we accomplished quite a bit! Sometimes it’s easy to lose track while going through the daily, weekly and monthly grind. Here are the highlights of what we did/made…

Bedroom
We went from ugh to ah in a matter of months. I was frustrated with myself for putting off starting a few things but in the end I think it worked for the better!

What we did in 2011:
Painting and a needed update for our bedspread. I’m still thinking of going with white and accenting with color through pillows.
Hung our Nelson bubble lamps.
Starry pelmet

What we need to work on/finish:
Recover bedside stools & redo lamps
Wood floors or decent carpeting
Louvered door for the closet

Stay tuned to Offbeat Home this week for the constellation light tutorial!

My Studio
I loved it when we got it set up the previous year but after working in it for a while I realized I needed to make changes.

What we did in 2011:
Made the steel prep table mobile
New flooring
New center work table
Reorganized the layout

Window shelf (in action)
Thread storage

What we need to work on/finish:
More shelving
The closet of doom

Breakfast Nook
A lackluster and unused space became a family project. Mom served for much of the inspiration.

Apartment Therapy’s Room for Color Contest

We decided enter the breakfast nook in Apartment Therapy’s Room for Color contest and we got the email that we’re in! I did email them to ask about the magazine and if it was a conflict of interest and I never heard back so I felt that was a green light. Each of the 4 division winners will receive a $1,000 gift card from Farrow & Ball. They carry some wallpaper that I’ve had my eye on for some time now and this would allow us to buy it (we’d be able to do an accent wall). We didn’t win anything monetary for the other, just bragging rights. I promise I’m not trying to be greedy, I just want some of that wallpaper. :)

Click on the link or the photo to take you to our page!

I am also going to use this opportunity to mention my friend Eve and her gloriously colorful bedroom. *You can favorite/vote for more than one entry, even in each division.*

I am going to let Puss-Puss ask for your votes!

The Breakfast Nook

We’ve been dealing with buying a new refrigerator for my mother’s condo the last couple of days. Not exactly what we were expecting when we woke up Monday morning, but we love the tenants and needed get them something ASAP. Lowe’s made it happen, as did the Lowe’s card.

Anyway, I’ve been meaning to make the breakfast nook post for sometime but the Charleston Home Magazine site needed to be updated. We got our copy of the magazine just before the beginning of the month. It’ll be available until the spring and the online version of the article can be found HERE. That was a helpful hint to go buy a copy! The photos were taken by Julia Lynn. Check out her site, her work is wonderful. We had a wonderful time working with Julia and Ellen, the magazine’s director. Thanks again for selecting our space!

Charleston Home Magazine

I took some new photos of the room last week and I’ll share them with you along with some of the history of various elements in the room.

It started with an inspiration photo featuring the shelves and then veered way off course. The shelves were purchased from Pottery Barn and as much as I love them, they were a splurge. I found this DIY solution on Pinterest that may serve as inspiration. Other new purchases include the rug, chairs and seat cushions, all purchased from World Market. Paint color is Wasabi by Valspar.

One-Room Revamp Challenge – Sneak Peek

Early this summer we entered Charleston Home Magazine’s One-Room Revamp Challenge. Lo and behold we’re one of the runners-up and our breakfast nook will be featured in the Fall/Winter issue, which will be out next week. I snapped a photo from the kitchen after the photo shoot and since it’s close to being out, I wanted to share the news.

I’ll post more info next week!

Bon Weekend – Vintage goodies

We picked up this wonderful pitcher and ice bucket at an estate sale for our bar cart in the breakfast nook {pictures coming soon}. They had a great selection of matching starburst glasses and other accessories, but we kept our purchases to just these. I think they’ll add a lovely touch to the space.

I have some projects to share next week and some exciting new ideas to try out. I am very, very thankful of Labor Day sales at Michaels happening right now! Psst… they honor A.C. Moore coupons, by the way!

Until then, I hope everyone has a safe and fabulous holiday weekend!
